Introducing a new series about exploring and practicing the ability to interpret anyone’s astrological birth chart!
As we look at each subject’s chart together, I’ll be introducing all planetary placements, dissecting the major 6 placements (Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Mercury, Mars, Venus), and connecting a few major aspects. As my ability to read astrological charts grows, I’ll be more willing to expand the subject matter, as this will only be scratching the surface of a full reading. These birth chart readings are meant for entertainment and astrological practice; and should not be perceived as factual.
For reference, I will only be using astro-charts.com for a visual representation of a subject’s illustrated natal chart and exact planetary degrees, and the book, The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need by Joanna Martine Woolfolk. All other judgments or opinions stated will be made by my own experience and previous astrological knowledge.
Lana Del Rey
Introduction: Lana Del Rey. Summertime Sadness. ’60’s Queen of the modern Indie scene. With albums like, Lust For Life, Norman Fucking Rockwell, and Born To Die, Lana’s “sad girl” aesthetic is what draws me into every artistic project she does. With our Sun, Mercury, and Pluto in similar placements, I’m drawn to Lana and her Moon-child energy like myself.

Dissecting the Big 6
Sun in Cancer: I can relate to this, and so much of Lana Del Rey’s chart – as I’m also a Cancer Sun. From that knowledge, it can be said that Lana is emotional, sensitive, and intuitive. Ruled by the moon, the water element, and driven by cardinal energy, she is action-driven. Though her emotions may get the best of her at times, Cancer Suns are recognized as loyal, kind, and complex. “One Cancer told me recently, ‘We’ve been sold a bill of goods by the stories we were told as children. There is no joy or happiness. Life is plain hard.'” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 25)
The quote above may be painting Cancer Suns in a pessimistic way, but from my understanding, it’s more of a victim complex issue with Cancer’s. Although all water signs of the astrological world get a reputation for being emotional – Cancer’s tend to take the cake for stewing and sitting in their own sadness. Along with the imagery of holding giant crustacean claws in front of them, Cancer Suns tend to set boundaries for people in their life, desperately guarding their vulnerable insides. “You tend to be a worrier and a silent brooder. People may pour out their hearts to you, but the flow never goes in the other direction. You are cautious about revealing too much of yourself; you guard your secrets well.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 25)
Lana Del Rey’s music resonates so much with her fans, as she’s willing to share vignettes of her romantic life and artistic expression. Romance, lust, and an overarching sadness spills from her Cancer Sun into her own self expression. Producing 7 studio albums since 2012, she has painted countless eras of relationships, moments of falling in and out of love, and the chaos that is dating a water-sign ruled powerful woman. Understanding Cancer Suns, I know she has no problem pulling from current and previous relationships for creativity. “You are possessive. Anyone who becomes part of your life will never again be entirely free. You try to stay in touch with friends, ex-lovers, former spouses, business associates, person’s you knew as children. Cancer is the cosmic collector- if you let anyone go out of your life, it is entirely un-willingly and never completely.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 25)
As far as Lana’s Cancer Sun in her chart, not only is it interesting her Sun degree lands on a pure 0 degrees (conjunction), but she shares her 8th House with her Cancer Sun, Cancer Mercury, and Cancer Mars. With the 8th House being described as, “Death and Regeneration”, and, “House of spiritual transformation, it rules the life forces that surround sex, birth, death, and afterlife”. (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 296) Lana’s most confusing house of mysticism is very clearly ruled by her psychic, and Moon-child energy. This kind of Cancer/water domination in the 8th house makes me believe Lana must have some witchcraft powers – or at least intuition that could predict the outcome of most any situation. From my own interpretation, having a Cancer Sun (identity, individuality) within the House associated with… how shall I say.. doom? This makes me wonder if this is why Lana’s cardinal sense of action, associated with a sharp and emotional tongue, is why she can land herself in trouble, especially surrounding her reputation, and the way she communicates online. More often than not, she seems to be responsible for her own “undoing”. She has penned a controversial letter to the public last year, asking, “Can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love, even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money – or whatever I want- without being crucified or saying that I’m glamorizing abuse?“, after she compares her image to that of Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj, and Cardi B. By taking a closer look at her chart, you can see Lana’s Cancer Sun is in Opposition with her Capricorn Neptune, signifying, “Vagueness of mind; Unbalanced emotions. Susceptible to treachery and deceit” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 354)
Moon in Leo: If you’ve listened to Lana’s latest single and album, Chemtrails Over the Country Club, you’ve heard her sing to her fans, “My moon’s in Leo, my Cancer is sun”. Although it’s not technically the correct terminology, we can forgive Lana, as she’s had multiple mistakes in the past over giving a wrong birth time, which has now been corrected. Although not as mainstream as the Sun sign, the Moon sign can be described as where, “you can spontaneously feel and express joy and pleasure, the side that reacts to emotional stimuli.” In addition, “The Moon is inextricably linked to what might be called your reaction to your environment, for the Moon has rulership over the five senses.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 193 & 194)
With a Moon in Leo, similar to Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, and Oscar Wilde, I can tell you one thing: when Lana allows other people into her emotionally vulnerable side (guarded by the pincers of the crab/Cancer side), she is exuberant, outgoing, and what I can only imagine, is being one of the funniest people. Joanna Martine Woolfolk describes Leo Moons as, “You like to be the center of attention and enjoy taking on public roles. You are highly expressive, and are especially drawn to the world of theatre, music, painting, and the arts. In a way, it might be said that you, like all lunar Leos, have a show-biz personality.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 204) Although I don’t know Lana Del Rey on a personal or intimate level, it’s very clear that her Leo Moon comes in handy during her creative and business opportunities. I can imagine she’s able to schmooze producers, collaborators, and other executives with her lovable Leo charm. On the downside with any Leo placement, the ego always plays a very big role in controlling emotions. Leo Moons can toe a line between being engaging versus coming across as self-centered or conceited. Leo’s of any major placement scream, “Fake it ’till you make it”, although the “faking it” can be perceived as arrogance. After being a fan of Lana’s, I feel as though I’ve seen peaks of her Leo Moon, after she has responded to a critic’s review of her album over an Instagram Story. Clearly hurt by criticism, Lana lashed out, claiming she would have another album coming soon, and wrote, “You’re right it would have been unnecessary if no one had significantly criticized everything about the album to begin with. But you did. And I want revenge”.
Lana’s Leo Moon lands in her 9th House, which is described as, “The House of Mental Exploration”. Along with that, “The 9th House rules your public expression of ideas and is therefore the house of publishing and literary efforts.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 296). I don’t find it very surprising that her ego-centered moon sign is the driven force behind her artistic expression. It makes me wonder if she uses self-gratification of fame and adoration for motivation, as much as she does for a passion for creativity.
With her Moon sign, Lana has a lot of activity when it comes to it’s interactions within the rest of her chart. For example, Lana’s Leo Moon Squares her Taurus Venus, being described as, “Careless, self-indulgent. Moody. Disappointment in love affairs.”(The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 355). Considering a Leo Moon and her Taurus Venus, it paints the picture of a possessive and self-centered love life that would be unfulfilled for her, if she is not given the huge amount of attention she desperately wants and needs.
Ascendant in Scorpio: As a Lana Del Rey fan for a while, I can remember her past photo shoots, that probably stimulated my bi awakening. Always with a cigarette in her hand, a black dress, and possibly hanging out of a vintage convertible; Lana embodies a sexy and mysterious Scorpio Rising.
If you’re not familiar with the Ascendant/Rising placement, it’s described as, “your goals, aims, and objectives, and indicates the main thrust of your creative powers. It is your mask of outward appearance.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 222). For most astrologers, the Ascendant/Rising can be a more important indicator of the sense of self, and an authentic natal chart reading than the Sun Sign.
“As a Scorpio Rising, you are happiest when you can control from behind the scenes. You tend to be secretive and reserved, and shun the spotlight because you can’t work there unnoticed… Some people claim that they are hypnotized by Scorpio Ascendants; it’s true that you have a way of knowing what others are thinking.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 222). It’s no wonder that once you become enchanted with Lana, you never stop. Understanding Scorpio placements, it’s no surprise her public perception can be vengeful, cruel, or misunderstood.
Mercury in Cancer: Yet again, another placement Lana and I have in common. For context, “In astrology, Mercury is the planet of mental activities, communication, and intellectual energy. It rules over your intelligence, perception and reason, memory, speaking, and writing… Day-to-day travel, short trips, and the various means of transportation are under it’s domain.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 241). As Mercury in most often than not, in the same sign as your Sun sign, we are back to talking about the sad-girl energy Lana possesses. Speaking, perceiving, and thinking like a Cancer, she is capable of digging deep into the spoken language to write songs like Cinnamon Girl; a true heart breaker.
“You are sensitive to what others think about you. You have an almost sixth-sense intuition and pick up signals from all around you. You believe that if we had to depend only on our eyes, we would see very little.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 243). I can imagine Lana being the awesome friend and entertainer that makes her Leo Moon, but the sensitivity and carefulness to always know just when the vibes are off in any situation. With Cancer signs being notorious for having an excellent memory, it’s understandable how her creativity paints very specific and detailed pictures of her romantic life.
Looking closer, her Mercury in Cancer Sextiles her Taurus Venus, creating harmony and opportunity between these two pairs. With Venus in it’s home sign of Taurus, talking to the planet of communication through a Cancerian lense, Lana Del Rey is capitalizing off her “sad girl” creativity. “Cheerful. Lighthearted. Artistic. Native leans towards literary and creative pursuits.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 356).
Mars in Cancer: Again, another Cancer placement in the 8th House for Lana. “Mars is the planet of physical energy. It governs your sex drive, your forcefulness, and your aggression. Mars is the planet that spurs you into action.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 252). As far as romantic relationships go, Lana’s Mars in Cancer may help shed some light on her internal monologue. Although her Mars lands in a cardinal sign, I sense the silent brooding turns temperamental coming through with this planetary placement.
As for Mars in Cancer, “If a lover is insensitive or unresponsive, he or she may find that your get-up-and-go just got up and went. Yet, as a native of this Mars placement, you will cling to a relationship that does not make you happy. You react only in outbursts of temper and nervous irritability.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 254). Unsurprising to me, a person with a lot of Cancer influence in her chart, I can imagine if Lana’s Mars is being perceived through a Cancerian lense, there could be behind-closed-door conversations that start in a place of frustration and end in angry tears. Although some people may suggest Mars in Cancer could suggest passive aggressiveness, I’d imagine for Lana, it’s another layer of internal protection and hard boundaries… until of course, her emotions get the best of her.
One major aspect that plays in Lana’s favor is the Conjunction between her Mars in Cancer, and her Mercury in Cancer. Again, all landing in the 8th House, this Conjunction can be described as, “Potential for high intellectualism. A flair for writing, speaking. Witty and expressive.”(The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 356). I believe it can be said, that it is written in the stars for Lana Del Rey to be such a gifted poet and song writer.
Venus in Taurus: Last, but certainly not least, we have to address Lana’s romantic expression head on. “Venus is the planet of love and pleasure. It rules over your capacity to express affection and to enjoy beauty. In addition, Venus lends your personality allure and desirability, and tells you what kind of sex appeal you posses” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 246). With Lana’s Venus placement landing in one of the most favorable home planets, the other being Libra, she is being directly complimented by the energy of luxury, indulgence, and beauty.
“Your passion can be smothering; you have an all-consuming need to make a lover belong to you… A bad love affair is hard on you, emotionally, so you take your time deciding on the right person to love.” (The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 248). Notorious for being possessive and ownership-driven, Tauruses are destined for romantic love that grows to be “too much” for some connecting souls.
Sharing her North Node (also in Taurus), in the 7th House, Lana’s House of “Partnership and Marriage” may not be all that complimentary. Although her Cancer Sun and Taurus Venus compliment each other as far as compatibility, Lana’s Taurus Venus in the 7th House may suggest, “feel first, think later”. Though Taurus’s tend to be slow in action, they’re stubborn when their mind is made up. For Venus in the 7th House, Joanna Martine Woolfolk says, “You look for harmony and fulfillment in both marriage and partnerships. You tend to marry early and possibly more than once.”(The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, pg. 310). Although we have yet to see a Del Rey wedding, I’m interested to see what this placement does for the future of her endeavors; which I hope are only prosperous.
In conclusion: Lana Del Rey is primarily water, fire, cardinal, and fixed energy dominant. Her femininity, sex appeal, and desire to lean into heartbreak is reflective in her craft and natal chart. As stated above, this reading just scratches the surface of the complexity of any chart reading- but, I hope you enjoyed it like I did!
